his year, we took 20 of our high school students to Stony Glen Camp for a weekend retreat. The goal was simple but meaningful: to give them space to reconnect with God in the middle of an incredibly busy school year. Life feels so heavy sometimes—between school, schedules, and personal struggles. Many of our students arrived worn out so it was perfect to have some time for them to rest, worship, and bond with God and each other. Don't you know, God showed up in powerful ways.
From Friday evening to Sunday afternoon, the days were packed but balanced. Friday night was all about kicking things off with mixers, worship, and some late-night nachos. Saturday included devotionals, more worship, a great message, and, of course, free time. Most students used this space to do whatever they needed to recharge, whether that was hanging out, playing cards, or (my personal favorite) jumping into a freezing lake during the polar plunge. Many of us took multiple plunges (way more than I thought I would, thanks to some very enthusiastic students dragging me back in). These moments of being loud and wild somehow became sacred—bonding us as a group and creating memories I know none of us will forget.
Saturday night’s prayer stations were another highlight. Giving students creative and personal ways to connect with God, whether by journaling, reflecting on scripture, or praying in silence, made that time truly special. By Sunday morning, I could see the difference in our students. They left lighter, more joyful, and recharged for the journey ahead.
One young man who has been coming recently to our gatherings, is usually stand-offish and quiet. At the point where I had already been in the lake multiple times, frozen and wanting to quit, he came up to me and asked if I would go jump in with him. Of course I did. It warmed my heart. I saw many changes in the youth that weekend.
Even with challenges, like juggling last-minute leader changes and navigating some heavy conversation, I saw God meet our team with grace every step of the way. This weekend reminded us that when we seek Him, we truly do find Him.
